At The Gracenote Piano Studio, our goal is to build a strong foundation for piano playing, foster comprehensive musical abilities, and prepare students for the possibility of learning a second instrument, should they choose to do so. We aim to cultivate confidence in our students, helping them perform comfortably in public and grow into capable, tasteful lifelong music enthusiasts.
We use the Faber Piano Adventures series, supplemented with additional resources, to teach the fundamentals of piano playing and music theory. With weekly lessons, most students can complete their foundational studies within 2 years.
Every student is unique, and we tailor our teaching methods and lesson plans to suit their individual needs and learning goals, aiming to fully realize each student's potential.
Throughout their learning journey, students will be introduced to a diverse range of music styles, such as classical, romantic, pop, ragtime, jazz, and folk music, among others. This exposure helps broaden their musical horizons and enhances their ability to appreciate different genres.
We believe piano is a performing art and strive to provide students with frequent opportunities to showcase their progress. These performances help students overcome stage fright, build confidence, and develop resilience. We organize two annual studio recitals, occasional small public performance events, and encourage participation in competitions and community concerts. Additionally, many of our students have had the opportunity to perform at school graduation ceremonies, church events, and as accompanists for school choirs, all of which significantly enhance their confidence and ability to perform comfortably in front of an audience.
We follow the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examination system, which serves as both a benchmark for students' progress and a goal to strive toward. This comprehensive approach develops well-rounded musicianship through the following areas:
Performance skills: Playing with accuracy and artistic expression.
Technical foundation: Building finger strength and dexterity.
Sight-reading: The ability to play unfamiliar music fluently.
Aural skills: Recognizing pitches, rhythms, and musical styles across different eras.
Music theory: Understanding the structure and language of music.
We believe competitions and masterclasses are vital to a student’s musical development. Competitions help students set goals, improve their skills, and build discipline and perseverance under pressure. Masterclasses offer unique opportunities to learn from experts, gain fresh insights, and receive constructive feedback.
Our studio encourages participation in competitions at various levels and organizes masterclasses with accomplished artists. These experiences help students enhance their skills, confidence, and resilience while deepening their understanding of music.
Systematic piano learning not only helps students excel at the keyboard but also lays a solid foundation for other instruments. Many local elementary schools introduce band programs in 4th grade, offering opportunities to learn percussion, wind, or brass instruments. Middle schools often have orchestral programs as well. Students with a strong piano background adapt quickly to these second instruments and, with dedication, may become standout performers in school ensembles or even audition successfully for regional and all-state orchestras.
We believe that listening to quality music is crucial to mastering the art of music. Therefore, we strongly encourage parents to play music regularly at home or in the car. It’s also highly beneficial to take children to live performances whenever possible. We will recommend various community concert resources to our students.
